Working with the Local Community

Although Southampton Community Tennis Centre is based primarily at the outdoor Sports Centre, we also undertake a considerable amount of outreach work around the city. This includes a year-round curriculum schools coaching & competition programme, attending fun days and working with local community centres.

Case Study - St. Denys Community Centre

Southampton Community Tennis Centre works with the Community Centre in St. Denys in a variety of different ways:

• School Holiday coaching provided free-of-charge to local children
• Indoor Mini Tennis for adults with learning disabilities
• Indoor and outdoor adult sessions for local residents

Activities are designed to improve co-ordination and ball skills and include:

• Throwing and catching alone and in pairs
• Throw and catch using a cone to trap the ball
• Throw and catch over a net
• Hit ups
• Rallying
• Aiming for cone
• Basic rules of tennis
• Basic technical teaching with tennis strokes

This case study shows the value to residents of having local on-site provision of a sport and caters for a wide variety of needs.
